Women vaccinating children against Polio in Karachi, Pakistan. Local authorities supported by WHO and UNICEF have vaccinated about 2 million children the last week. Polio is a highly infectious disease that can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. Cases have decreased by over 99% since 1988, from an estimated 350 000 cases in Karachi then, to 74 reported cases in 2015. The reduction is the result of the global effort to eradicate the disease.
