Photo and caption by @petekmuller. Residents walk through the streets of downtown Mogadishu, Somalia in the late afternoon. This is a fascinating and somewhat eerie city to explore. Owing to serious security threats, foreign journalists often transverse town under the protection of extensive armed security teams. Such teams are hired privately for the hefty price of between 700-1000 USD per day. They usually consist of between 6-10 armed men, spread across two vehicles with the journalists in a third vehicle between them. I watch the city pass out the window, looking for scenes that might make for interesting images. Something catches my eye and I speak up. "Can we stop here," I ask with a sense of reservation. The Somali man driving the car picks up a two way radio and alerts the other vehicles that the photographer wants to stop. The convoy pulls to the side of the road slightly ahead of the scene that piqued my interest. The armed men jump off the back of the truck, weapons at the ready, scanning corners and rooftops for possible threats. They essentially set a perimeter around the area in which I hope to work. All normal activity, including what originally prompted my request, has stopped as a result of this conspicuous maneuvering. The two way radio hisses and a voice speaks in rapid Somali. "You can get out now but we cannot stay long," the driver says over his shoulder. Nothing like working under pressure. #Somalia #Mogadishu #conflict #war #Africa #security #photography #photojournalism
