Photo by @daviddoubilet An American Crocodile rests in a lazy current in a mangrove channel in Cuba's Jardines de la Reina or Gardens of the Queen, a National Marine Park located fifty miles off the coast of southern Cuba. The Gardens of the Queens marine ecosystem is a living museum of what the Caribbean used to look like five decades ago before overfishing and overdevelopment depleted reefs beyond recovery. Dense mangroves surround and support the rich reef system. The crocs are called the engineers of the mangroves because their activity creates runways increasing circulation.
