Fish sweep over a garden of hard corals on a seamount in the remote waters of Indonesia. Coral is susceptible to changes in seawater temperature and salinity, with nearly half of the ocean’s shallow corals degraded or killed through environmental alteration. Creating large marine protected areas that keep ecosystems intact and resilient has helped combat these adverse effects.
