Carved into the mountainside by Buddhist monks between the second and fifth centuries, the Buddhas of Bamiyan, Afghanistan, were ruthlessly destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. The Taliban, in one of their most widely condemned acts, destroyed the statues calling them sacrilegious. People of all religions mourned the loss of the magnificent statues carved in Greco-Buddhist style.
