99 years ago today, the US Congress approves a declaration of war against Germany. This heartbreaking French poster advertises Military Orphan Day, June 20, 1915. Among the American aid groups established to help suffering Europeans during World War I was the Fatherless Children of France.
The organization matched a French child with an American godparent who provided the child with 10 cents a day (about $2.35 in 2016 dollars). These funds had a special purpose: to keep war-torn families together. The stipend helped widowed mothers afford to raise their children rather than be forced by poverty to surrender them to orphanages.
We've launched a new page of World War I stories and objects today in commemoration of the anniversary. Check it out: http://s.si.edu/ww1
