@natgeo @stevewinterphoto Local people need to benefit financially from living with predators. Conservation NGO’s have the programs to assist in better husbandry for protecting people’s livestock, like predator proof corrals, as long as the local’s agree to not kill the predators. Vaccination programs really help - they put more money in the pockets of the farmers by saving more of their livestock, that would have died of disease. Balancing the loss of livestock by a predator against the livestock that will be saved by vaccinations - in most instances up to 30% of their animals are saved each year, that would have died to disease - you are taking an economic negative and turning it into an economic positive. Simply by offering vaccinations that are found in every capital of the world at USAID offered for free. As long as a program is set up so the community will not kill the big cats - as they are benefitting financially by these programs set up under the umbrella of big cat conservation. The best way is to set up the programs for a 3 year period and then the community takes over the program and runs it themselves paid for by the fact they have more money in their pockets - because they live with predators and work to both save more of their livestock from predator conflict and living within a ecosystem intact with predators. Studies have shown that farmers get higher crop yields and healthier livestock populations from living close to intact ecosystems and forests. Forests provide us with up to 50% of the oxygen we breathe - oceans the rest. They give us 75% of the fresh water. If we can save the forest of the Amazon and other areas in Central and South America for the Jaguar and Puma. The forests of Central Africa for the leopard, lion, elephants etc. And the forests of South Asia for the Tigers and Leopards. If you save the top predator in any ecosystem you save everything that lives with them. So if - We Save Big Cats we can help Save Ourselves. The Big Cats Initiative supports efforts to save big cats through assessment, on-the-ground conservation, education, and a global public-awareness campaign to shine a light on this issue called "Cause an Uproar," l
