Photograph by @Thomas Peschak During the stormy southwest monsoon, reef manta rays travel to a small bay in the northern Maldives called Hanifaru. Upwelling brings nutrients to the surface, turning the water into a rich plankton brew. Microscopic armies of crustaceans (no bigger than your pupil) are the mainstay of a manta’s diet. When plankton concentrations are patchy, manta rays feed singly, somersaulting themselves backward like a dog chasing its tail. However, when plankton densities increase…they opt for a more collaborative approach. The mantas begin to swim closer together in a unique behavior known as “cyclone feeding”. As they swirl in tight formation, the column creates its own vortex, sucking in and delivering plankton right into the mantas cavernous mouths. The experience of free diving and photographing amongst such masses of rays is truly unforgettable. For more manta videos watch my recent TED talk “Dive into an Ocean Photographers World” at www.ted.com
