The leopard is so strong and comfortable in trees that it often hauls its kills into the branches. By dragging the bodies of large animals (such as this impala buck in the foreground) aloft it hopes to keep them safe from scavengers such as hyenas.

In fact a male leopard can drag a carcass three times its own weight – including small giraffes – six metres up a tree. Leopards can also efficiently hunt from trees, where their spotted coats allow them to blend with the leaves until they spring with a lethal pounce.
They are also successful nocturnal predators that stalk antelope, deer, and pigs by stealthy movements in tall grass or wooded areas.
