Photos by @Cory Richards Omony Richard was abducted by the LRA from his village in Northern Uganda when he was 11 and spent 12 years in the bush, fighting a war he had no place in. This will be his second Christmas at home.
In our hour long interview, he focused on trauma and how reintegration is one of the most difficult processes he's had to go through. After being to forced to kill, terrorize, and otherwise dehumanize himself and the political landscape that swallowed him as a young boy, his story didn't end when he lay down his AK-47.
Most conflicts disappear from front line news when the guns stop firing. But pervasive trauma lasts decades after the last bullet is fired. The process of reintegration is not only helpful, but vital to mitigating recidivism and further cycles of violence. I'm currently working with @pathwaystopeaceuganda documenting reintegration in Northern Uganda, looking at how we incorporate former child soldiers and ex combatants back into functioning society before losing them back into violence...as often times, that is their only transferable skill set when they come out of the bush. @natgeocreative
