Photo by @mike_hettwer - They look like something out of a science fiction movie but the Maunsell Forts were defensive towers built during World War II to help protect England from German warplanes dropping bombs on London. German pilots would use the Thames River as an aerial guide to fly all the way to London, so the towers were located near the entry to the river in the English Channel. Teams of 250 soldiers lived in these groups of seven towers and used the antiaircraft guns and spotlights mounted on the roof to shoot at the incoming planes. Reportedly they shot down 22 planes and 30 flying bombs.

One of the towers here was struck by a Norwegian ship in the 1953 killing several people in the tower and knocking one down. They were decommissioned in the 1950's and were used by pirate radio stations in the 1960's. Now they are a curiosity reachable by boat in several hours from the southeast coast of England via Queenborough. This area is also a short distance from the Channel Tunnel train in Dover that takes visitors under the English Channel to Paris.
