A local man guides his canoe through the calm waters of Xochimilco

Xochimilco floating garden is a remnant of the lakes that once filled the valley containing Mexico City. When Europeans first arrived they found a huge city connected by canals. Today residents of Xochimilco still use those canals to transport food and goods. They also provide a rare bit of peace and quiet in one of the world’s largest urban areas.
