A riverboat loaded with rice moves through one of the canals that crisscross Vietnam's Mekong delta. Vietnamese farmers, who make the Mekong delta the region’s rice bowl, fear that hydro-electric dam projects built by its neighbors upstream will trap fertile sediments upstream and threaten harvests.

National Geographic Magazine writer Michelle Nijhuis and photographer David Guttenfelder traveled the Mekong to explore the impact of dam construction on the river's ecology and livelihood of millions who share it.
