Poetic and painterly qualities are integrated in Basquiat's work. He uses words to invest his painted and drawn images with multiple meanings, from the everyday to the erudite, and in turn, his writing style is highly descriptive and imagistic, as if he is painting very precise scenes with carefully chosen words.
