Workers load sacks of rice on to a canal boat in Vietnam's Mekong Delta. The humid delta, fertilized by Mekong River sediment, has allowed Vietnam to become a major rice exporter. Newly constructed hydroelectric dams on the river's main stem will trap fertile sediments upstream, threatening harvests.
Please take a look at our new story "Harnessing the Mekong or Killing It?" in the May issue of National Geographic by photographer @dguttenfelder, writer @rhymeswithmyhouse and photo editor @roseleen.
