Photo by @dguttenfelder A man braves a powerful river current as he checks fishing traps in the rapids above Khone Falls in southern Laos, the largest waterfall on the Mekong River.
Laos is pressing ahead on the Don Sahong, the latest in a cascade of dams in China and Laos on the main stem of the Mekong River. The proposed site is a key migration route for many native Mekong fish species and fisheries experts believe the dam could wreak havoc on regional food supplies and inundate much of this area.

National Geographic Magazine writer Michelle Nijhuis and photographer David Guttenfelder traveled the mighty Mekong to explore the ecological and cultural impact of dam construction on the River. Please see our May issue story “Mekong River Dams: Harnessing the Mekong or Killing It?”
