Kinkajou baby by Mattias Klum for @natgeo in Panama. Go to @mattiasklumofficial to see the adult Kinkajou female and one of her favorite meals. On one of my National Geographic Magazine assignments in Central America the goal was to make the first story about the little known kinkajou. This animal, the size of a house cat, is quite hard to catch sight of in its natural habitat. It lives its entire life high up in the canopy in the neotropical rain forests and just to make things easier for a photographer, it's only active at night... So, relatively few people have ever seen a kinkajou in the wild. Without being in any hurry about it, they move from branch to branch with strong, clawed paws and a long prehensile tail. My camera assistant at the time, Lars-Magnus Ejdeholm and I knew that research, a good strategy and patience were essential if we were to get pictures that told of the secret life of the kinkajou. For eleven weeks we sat night after night high in the treetops, 25 to 50 meters (80 to 150 feet) above the ground. Finally we got lucky and a female kinkajou showed up with her gorgeous little baby. Eventually, as the animals got slightly habituated the kinkajou pup came within feet of my lens, its face moist after drinking from large balsa blossoms filled with nectar. It's such a personal little creature. The eyes seem to be asking, What is this? Are you dangerous? This shot was like a gift from the forest. A blessing after a lot of climbing and moulding away in tree forks. The animal comes to you, not the other way around. #kinkajou #baby #sweet #wwf #panama #rainforest #conservation @natgeo @thephotosociety
