Today in 1845: President John Tyler signs a congressional resolution to annex the Republic of Texas. This hunting knife was owned by Sam Houston, who was the republic's first president. After Texas became a U.S. state, Houston was elected as the state's US senator.
Note the eight-point star-shaped plate with "Houston" inscribed on the knife's handle.
