A famous local mime and longstanding resident of the Bywater, Miss Pearl is known for having an open house for low-income buskers and artists trying to stay afloat in the rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods surrounding the French Quarter. The Buskers Bunkhouse is always full of musicians, but is struggling to survive with the steep rise in property taxes since Hurricane Katrina. Miss Pearl says: "This is a delicate ecosystem for art, and like any ecosystem, if you go moving things around you could kill it.” I stayed at the Busker’s Bunkhouse for just a few nights three years ago.
