The desert spadefoot toad of central Australia can survive without water for years. It burrows into the ground, secretes a membrane around itself, and goes into the deep sleep of aestivation. But it only takes one rainstorm to wake it up. I photographed this frog as it broke the surface of a patch of wet sand and resumed life.
