Photo by @Thomas Peschak Things happened so quickly that I still don't know if this shark was gaping at me or had just swallowed a sardine. Just a few inches from my underwater camera it turned on a dime and elegantly avoided what I was certain was going to be a collision. Blacktip sharks have become quite common along South Africa's east coast over the past decade and are the focus of a shark tourism industry centered on the KwaZulu Natal coast. Their slender pointy teeth are specialized for feeding on small fish. A photograph from my recent book "Sharks and People" published by the University of Chicago Press.
