They've traditionally used the Conservancy as a feeding ground in the dry season, but with rain and weather patterns becoming erratic, many of these elephants have become residents.
Lewa has a fluctuating population of 100 to 400 elephants which have traditionally used the Conservancy as a dry season feeding ground. But with the rains and weather patterns becoming erratic, most of these elephants have become permanent residents. This puts pressure on Lewa's ecosystem. To help solve this issue, Lewa has worked with a number of stakeholders to open the Mount Kenya elephant corridor, which allows elephant populations to move freely between Lewa, Ngare Ndare & Mount Kenya ecosystems. The corridor allows genetic mixing of elephants and has reduced human-elephant conflict in the area.
