Since their quiet return in the 1980s, cougars have thrived in the northern portion of Yellowstone National Park and nearby areas of Montana. These large cats coexist and compete with wolves, bears, and people for space and food. A new study is in place to evaluate the current abundance, distribution, and ecological influence of Yellowstone’s charismatic and secretive big cat. Depending largely on noninvasive survey methods, such as remote cameras and genetic sampling of hair and scat left behind on the landscape, this study aims to incorporate cutting edge technology with classic field biology. Using powerful imagery and robust science, researchers hope to bring awareness about the lives of these ecologically important carnivores to foster coexistence and wise conservation in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
