Monday’s apex predator is the grey wolf. Photograph by @PaulNicklen for @natgeo with @CristinaMittermeier and @AprilBencze. Please follow us on @paulnicklen as we post a new apex predator everyday this week and on @sea_legacy as we post a marine apex predator each day. Grey wolves were eliminated from Yellowstone National Park by 1926 via government ‘predator control programs’ and a lack of protection. The removal of an apex predator from an ecosystem causes what is called a ‘top down trophic cascade’ – resulting in a dramatic change to an ecosystem over time. In this case, resulting in reduced forests and foliage, more mid-level predators, less small prey populations, and more. The role of the grey wolf can be illustrated clearly by the wolf’s reintroduction to Yellowstone National Park in 1995. This restored the park in many ways, including regulating prey numbers and movements which allowed forests, foliage and streambanks to recover, restoring beaver and songbird populations, reducing the population of coyotes, all of which in turn hugely benefitted the entire landscape.
