Photography by @JohnStanmeyer for National Geographic World Food Day — As our population grows, how will we feed ourselves in an affordable, environmentally balanced, healthy way? I took this photograph of Aisha Barka and her daughter Mariam in northeast Ethiopia a few years ago for the @natgeo story, End of Plenty. Aisha along with nearly one thousand other Eritreans had crossed into Ethiopia when food prices began to sore in combination with drought and growing conflict in their home country. Like others in the makeshift refugee camp, Aisha and her daughter hadn't eaten in days as aid agencies had not yet made it to this remote and unexpected migration of so many people. With humility and kindness, Aisha allowed me to spend some time with her. She offered me the only thing she had, a cup of tea while I shared with then a few biscuits. Fortunately that day NGOs arrived with bags of sorghum to help feed those who could not feed themselves. For this story (it ran in late 2008) I traveled to nine counties to document how soaring food prices were effecting our ability to feed ourselves. This portrait of Aisha never ran in the magazine yet to this day tugs at my emotions on how anyone of us can be effected by rising food costs, weather pattern change and events in life that may not allow us to afford to feed ourselves. With our population by 2050 reaching 9 billion fellow human beings, how will we afford to feed ourselves? National Geographic continues its in-depth look at food in the project, Future of Food.
