Photo by @paulnicklen on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック and @sea_legacy. Massive factory trawlers drag their nets on the bottom of the ocean, 40 miles offshore from Vancouver Island. We approached to within a safe distance to look at the various species of birds around the ship and noticed hundreds of rockfish being discarded as by-catch. In less than 15 minutes, we scooped up over 50 fish and could have easily collected hundreds. Other species were sinking and we were not able to identify them. The fish were descaled but we believe that they were Shortraker Rockfish which are one of the oldest living marine species on Earth sometimes reaching over 150 years old. Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canada managed our Atlantic Cod stocks to a complete crash. They allow fish farms on both of our coasts and they allow by-catch as acceptable waste. We must demand better management of our species and ecosystems. We must also hold commercial fishing operations accountable for their actions. Out of sight, out of mind in this case. Through SeaLegacy and @ナショナルジオグラフィック we will be shining a bright light on these types of issues in the coming years. With @Cristina Mittermeier, @aprilbencze and @oren.lawson.
