Fanouris, a young Greek farmer, explains me : "When we planted the cabbage, price was 70 cents a unit - now that they are ready to be picked, price has suddenly fallen to 15 cents. It's not even worth cutting… ". Entire fields of cabbages are let to rot, because of its falling market price. And now Fanouris is broke. We salvaged one and had it for lunch. The unit price is so low it's not even worth transporting it to the market place - it would end up costing the #farmer. Instead, he will drive his tractor over his entire field, to smash the rotting cabbages : they will at least fertilise the soil. Exactly like the stock market, the price of vegetables can vary tremendously - I find this unacceptable. After all, it's perfectly healthy food grown under the Mediterranean sun, no one should be allowed to gamble with this... It's heartbreaking and the system is at fault. Any solutions?
