Drilling for groundwater, near Hanford, CA. Photo by @peteressick. With many farmers in the Central Valley receiving reduced or no water allotments for irrigation, some have turned to the expensive and risky measure of drilling for groundwater. This farmer paid $200,000 to have a well drilled 1,200 feet deep. Studies have shown the water table in the Central Valley is dropping, so relying on groundwater is a temporary solution to a long-term problem. Also, I was a guest editor on the NG Your Shot story "Nature in Black and White" that was published today. Thanks to all who submitted.
