During World War II, Liberty Ships carried supplies such as ammunition, fuel, and food. On today's date in 1945, Liberty Ship SS Henry Bacon was torpedoed and destroyed by German planes off the coast of Norway. The captain made sure 19 Norwegian refugees on board made it into lifeboats, along with young radio officer, Spud Campbell. Fifteen American seamen—including the captain—died as the vessel sank.
This is a model of a Liberty Ship in our collection.
