Adapting to Change: An Example from Greenland. Photo by @peteressick. For a story about the Inuit of Greenland shifting to an agricultural life, I wanted to photograph a harvest. I met a surveyor named Poul Erik who had visited just about every farm in southern Greenland. He told me about two brothers who had a potato farm near an ice field, and found out when their harvest was planned. We arrived by boat a day early, and my heart dropped when I saw that the harvesting of the field nearest to the water had already begun. When you meet a farmer, the custom in Greenland is to go to his farmhouse, have some tea and biscuits, and get acquainted. I knew I had no time to spare, so I broke custom, jumped out of the boat, and started shooting. This picture tells an important story about cultural change brought about by climate change. Of the thousands of pictures that I took in Greenland, this serene scene of the Inuit farmers adapting to their new world in the soft, northern light is my favorite. -excerpt from "Our Beautiful, Fragile World."
