Mt. Huber, Mt. Victoria, Lake O'Hara, Yoho NP, Canada. Photo by @peteressick on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. J.E.H. MacDonald was a painter and a member of Canada's famed Group of Seven. From 1924-1930 he spent every summer painting at Lake O'Hara. He suffered fro what was probably undiagnosed depression and anxiety, but he said he always felt great at Lake O'Hara. During his seven visits, he made over 100 oil sketches thinking he would use them for reference to later make larger finished works in the studio. He described his method as: Get the effect, it goes quickly. The objects remain and can be studied at leisure if need be. MacDonald died in 1932 and few of the finished canvases were made. However, I find the sketches inspiring for their raw energy and feeling, and I would recommend them to anyone interested in transforming art of the natural landscape.
