An amish girl rides her pony alongside a hay wagon on which I was riding, being driven by her brothers. This is from a project I began a few years ago on the industrialisation of the Amish in northern Indiana, USA. The Amish are famously averse to being photographed, but to degrees that vary greatly from region to region. Photographing children is often tolerated because they are not yet baptised, and not yet technically Amish. Sometimes not even the Amish are aware that the roots of this prohibition date as far back as to the advent of wet plate cameras, when Amish bishops became concerned about the rising popularity of their church members posing for portraits. Expression of pride is a big no-no in the faith, and such ostentatious navel-gazing was soon banned. If you find yourself in a situation where you just can't help taking a picture, don't ask permission. Often they don't mind, if you're discreet, and if you don't ask they can remain innocent of collusion in making the photo.
