O’ahu tree snails, known locally as kāhuli or pūpū kani oe, are recognized as the voices of the forest, playing an important role in Hawaiian culture and oral history. Described as singing, these small creatures have been the inspiration for traditional Hawaiian songs and chants called “mele”. Nocturnal in nature, O’ahu tree snails spend their time in native trees and bushes where they graze on fungi. Today, the greatest threat to this species, and others like it, comes from introduced predators such as rats, Jackson’s chameleons, and especially the predatory snail Euglandina rosea. Photo taken at the Snail Extinction Prevention Program (SEPP) in Honolulu, Hawaii.

This December, we’re counting down to the anniversary of the Endangered Species Act on December 28th. Each day, we’ll feature a different species protected by this act so you can learn more about their stories. #snails #Oahu #animal #wildlife #photography #animalphotography #wildlifephotography #studioportrait #PhotoArk #HopeForSpecies @insidenatgeo
