Claude Monet, born #onthisday in 1840, was raised in Le Havre, Normandy. Although his mother supported his ambitions to be a painter, his father wanted him to pursue business. He was very close to his mother, but she died when he was 16 years old.

Shortly after, at the age of 18, he met fellow artist #EugeneBoudin, who would encourage Monet to develop his techniques, teach him the "en plein air" (outdoor) techniques and take Monet on painting excursions. He thought of Boudin as his master, whom "he owed everything to" for his later success.
