Twenty years ago however, the local community came together to set up the Misool Marine Reserve. Today, this 470-square-mile (1,220 square-km) marine protected area is thriving. The biomass (the weight of living things) has gone up on average by 200% and at some key sites up 600%! The booming fish population also doesn’t stay inside the no-take zone, so local fishermen benefit from the protection. This place is a blueprint for how we can protect our ocean for wildlife and for people. In photo #1, a clown fish peers through an anemone. In photo #2, bluefin trevallies, on the hunt, sweep across the reef, above staghorn coral, sending smaller fish, including striped scissortail sergeants, in all directions.
