Cristina @lademiddel’s project, Gentlemen’s Club, focuses on the often overlooked other half of the prostitution business.
In 2015, aiming to achieve a better visual balance in the representation of sex work, De Middel put out an advert in a newspaper in Rio de Janeiro asking for clients willing to pose in exchange for money. Many men responded, and it became the first chapter of the project.
Over seven years, De Middel traveled to 10 cities with links to the business to collect 100 images and interviews: Rio de Janeiro, Havana, Mexico City, Paris, Bangkok, Los Angeles, Lagos, Kabul, Amsterdam and Mumbai.
"All the men were asked about their first experience, motivations, feelings and opinions, and all the men were paid for their time and for sharing their privacy with an unknown person that is me," says De Middel.
De Middel's series Gentlemen's Club is on show as part of the group exhibition Close Enough at @hangar.photoartcenter in Brussels, Belgium, until December 16.
