Last night, I was lucky enough to catch the new West End production of Martin McDonaugh’s shocking pitch black comedy ‘The Pillowman’. What made it even more thrilling for me is that I knew all three of the excellent main cast - Steve Pemberton, Lily Allen and Paul Kaye. In the case of Steve, it completed my trilogy of seeing all three of ‘The League Of Gentlemen’ cast in a play this year. If you can get a ticket, I highly recommend it.

It was also such a blast to see Paul Kaye onstage again (the last time was ‘Matilda’). Paul was briefly in ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ as a zombie and very memorably in ‘Spaced’ as Hoover. But he also gave me one of my first ever TV jobs. Having seen the trailer for ‘A Fistful Of Fingers’ he asked me in 1996 to direct the credit sequence for a BBC special starting his red carpet terrorist, Dennis Pennis called ‘Very Important Pennis’. I was 22 years old!

This 16mm title sequence shot was all shot in one day / night. The alley that he sneaks down was in Kings Cross near the production company I sometimes worked for (Dancing Fleas!) and that particular location was in every damn 80’s and 90’s music video ever. It’s long since demolished.

This sequence brings back very fond memories and I’d love to thank the amazing Mr Kaye for asking me to direct it, since I looked about 12. Fun times!
