Creative work is therapy. We can learn deep truths about ourselves, and about our relationship with the world. But we have to listen. If the creative work doesn’t feel honest, something is telling us to dig a little deeper into that part of the work. My books have all been a labour of love, even if all you see is a colourful children’s book on a shelf.

Mostly I’m pushing through my own fear of failure, my own imposter syndrome, and wave after wave of anxiety. Every moment I spend storyboarding or taking photos or drawing pictures or writing is a win. Another weed plucked for another handful of fresh soil.

I do have some intentions with my work, and mostly they seem to go unnoticed. I like to think that the unexpected joys are the true successes. My children’s books connecting with people with learning disabilities. My photography or words giving permission to celebrate and understand someone’s connection with their dog. A little human’s first word being “Momo”. I never intended on any of these gifts, but they make it worthwhile.

If you find yourself stuck from creating, trapped behind a wall of insecurities and anxiety, I’m right there with you, nudging you to move forward despite the stuckness. Because you did the same for me.
