Pekingese dogs – the small and playful breed depicted on this hanging scroll – were the favourite breed of China’s Dowager Empress Cixi 🐶
As well as being celebrated in paintings, the tiny Pekingese were frequent companions in portraits of elite families from the Qing Dynasty.
These pampered pups enjoyed a lifestyle almost as lavish as their wealthy companions – objects from the Imperial palace included a cloisonne and jade dog cage, and a miniscule, embroidered satin jacket!
To celebrate our #ChinasHiddenCentury exhibition, this scroll is on display alongside other objects from the 1800s, including a painstakingly conserved bamboo jacket.
🖼 See these playful pups in Room 33 of the Museum – the Sir Joseph Hotung Gallery of China and South Asia.
🏛 Visit #ChinasHiddenCentury for more beautiful objects from the 1800s, on display until 8 October – link in bio.
