The North Slope of Alaska is famous for clouds of fearless mosquitos. I learned this the hard way while on assignment for National Geographic Magazine.
Desperate after going three days without taking a single good photo, I decided to take off my shoes and socks in a scenic place and let the mosquitos eat me alive for twenty minutes or so. They piled on so thick they made a crackling sound. Once back in my truck, I remember my feet itching so badly that I scratched them raw for three hours straight, at times forgetting to swallow and drooling because it felt so good.
There were two silver linings at least: this became one of the most talked about photos of my entire career, and I was even given a coupon for a free pedicure from the director of photography of National Geographic.
I still don’t think my feet looked that bad.
