Introducing the biodegradable Habitat Pods that give wildlife a fighting change after bushfires!

During the 2019/20 black summer bushfires, almost 3 billion animals were killed, injured or displaced in Australia. Those animals who survived found their habitat destroyed, and the lack of vegetation cover left small, ground-dwelling animals like potoroos and bandicoots exposed and vulnerable to predators like cats and foxes.

These clever flat-pack habitat pods provide biodegradable shelters for ground-dwelling wildlife, protecting them from predators after bushfires. The pods are designed to eventually break down and become valuable nutrients for insects, on which native animals can feast.

The habitat pods are the brainchild of conservation ecologist Dr Alex Carthey and her initiative ReHabitat, which was recently named the winner of Taronga’s accelerator program HATCH. She received a $55,000 grant thanks to our wonderful sponsors BridgeLane Foundation, Wollemi Capital Group and Bird Holcomb Foundation. Alex is planning to use the funds to prepare for the next fire season, which is only six months away.

HATCH is the only accelerator program in the world that is run by a conservation zoo, with the aim to support ideas that address key environmental or conservation challenges.
