He would have turned 80 today. 🎾 The first African American to win the U.S. Open men’s singles title and a champion later at Wimbledon, Ashe was known for his poise and commitment to fairness. Ashe pushed for greater access to to the sport for African American children, wrote about the history of African American athletes, and advocated for the end of apartheid in South Africa. After contracting HIV from a blood transfusion following heart surgery, Ashe raised awareness about the disease and spoke at the United Nations about it.
