It’s fascinating to me because I am a traditional kayak builder myself and love to see this ancient and sophisticated technology so alive. Inuit are wedded to their customary ways of life, particularly the use of kayaks and dogsleds. In combination with a hand-thrown harpoon and float line, the kayak is part of a hunting system the Inuit adapted over time to capture seals and narwhals more efficiently. It helped the people successfully migrate from Siberia and survive a significant climate cooling in Greenland. Today this system remains the Inuit’s primary way of hunting in open water, and its use alongside quotas ensures that this unbelievably beautiful homeland will remain sustainably managed for millennia more.
