The premise of Straight 8 is that you shoot an entire short on one roll of film and edit in camera. So what you shot, is what you got. Here’s the intro I wrote to introduce it… “Hey there, so sorry not to be there with you tonight to introduce this very silly short. I’m almost happy not to be present as it barely qualifies as a film, even though it is technically shot on it. Back in 2001 Ed Sayers asked me to make a shoot for Straight 8, and I came up with the idea for ‘Forced Hilarity’ and shot it one afternoon with four friends; @friedgold, @onetakewoop, Mark Morris and Simon Pegg’s sister Katy. My basic idea was to shoot two couples having a suspiciously lovely day, with enthusiastic speech bubbles instead of title cards, and then show how they really feel with contrasting think bubbles. I timed everything out on the reel to this KPM library track, but unfortunately the very first shot went awry with a missed timing and so everything is slightly out of sync. It doesn’t really matter, but you’ll notice at the very end my surprise twist cuts out very quickly and you have to read it fast. This only makes it more mysterious. I also attempted a fade to black, but this didn’t work either, but it does look ever so avant garde. I made all the speech and think bubbles myself and I am most proud of the fact that I did all the in-camera whip pans which are pretty slick. The constraints of shooting on one reel are a great exercise to do all the editing in camera. I really enjoyed that aspect, but sadly my second hand Super 8 camera broke after this and I’ve never had it repaired. I do miss it. It was the same camera I got as a joint Christmas and birthday present with my brother in the late 80’s which started us both making movies. I’m sure if I was there tonight someone would be able to replace the missing piece of the camera. Maybe I’ll get it fixed and start doing these again.
