Trepanning is a surgical name for drilling a hole into the skull.
Prehistoric evidence shows humans were at it as early as around 10,000 years ago, the theory being it was done for spiritual purposes or as treatment for a range of head-related ailments. These days, surgeons refer to the technique as a craniotomy, and safely use it for various procedures.
But self-trepanation, or trepanning someone without proper training, is obviously dangerous, and can potentially lead to death. Still, that hasn't stopped a good number of people in recent years from trying it out.
