The Attwater’s prairie chicken is best known for “booming” – a dance done by males to attract females during mating season. They stomp their feet and fill the orange air sacs on the sides of their neck, creating a sound that can be heard up to half a mile away. Once upon a time, nearly one million of these birds could be found in the wild. Unfortunately, unrestricted hunting, loss of prairie habitat, and heavy grazing by cattle caused their numbers to drop to just 42 individuals by 1996. Intensive conservation efforts and the establishment of a Texas refuge have kept this species from going extinct, but much work remains to secure a bright future for the Attwater’s prairie chicken.
