In 2001, the population of piping plovers in North America was estimated to be less than 6,000 breeding adults. Especially endangered in the Great Lakes area and along the Atlantic coastline, these shorebirds nest in open stretches of sand and gravel. Unfortunately, its nesting spots often include busy beaches, roadsides, and even active gravel mines. Conservation programs since the 1990s have helped the population climb to around 8,000 breeding adults, but we can all play a part in their continued recovery. When visiting the beach, minimize driving on the sand and keep pets on leash. These two behaviors help to greatly minimize habitat disturbance, giving the piping plover a better shot at survival.
