He aimed to create a massive breeding farm where the animals could flourish on his vast, privately owned savanna. He’d fund the operation by sawing off and selling his animals’ horns. Made of keratin, the same material as fingernails, rhino horn can grow back at a rate of about four inches per year if cut properly. According to Hume, selling horn, mostly to buyers in Asia for traditional medicine, carvings, and jewelry, could be sustainable if it was ever legalized. He started with close to 200 southern white rhinos and now has almost 2,000. This month, the rhinos and his 21,000-acre farm operation will be put up for auction online—though the horn collection he’s amassed won't be a part of it. Without any legal international trade, he’s reached a financial breaking point. There are now only about 22,000 rhinos across Africa.
