Food has the power to create a sense of community, joy, and comfort, but it can also trigger negative thoughts and guilt, even for those without disordered eating. Diet culture has conditioned many of us to categorize certain foods as “bad” and feel ashamed when we indulge in them, perpetuating a harmful cycle of restriction and guilt. That’s why I don’t believe in the concept of a “cheat meal,” which only reinforces this negative mindset.

Personally, I know which foods make my body feel amazing, such as fresh fruit and dark, leafy greens, but I also know how much I enjoy my favorite foods. Today, I want to encourage you to let go of the “shouldn’ts” and instead listen to your body’s authentic cravings. Instead of thinking, “I shouldn’t have this chocolate,” try reframing it as, “I want this chocolate, and that’s okay because it’s what my body is telling me it needs right now.” It’s important to honor our cravings and fuel our bodies in a way that feels good, without any shame or guilt attached.
