At Mino Festival last week. A 4-hour journey from my home in Tokyo to the countryside of Gifu Prefecture. A centuries-old tradition of washi paper making in this area is celebrated in paper blossoms affixed to portable shrines and parades through the Edo era streets, ‘petals’ left behind on the sides of buildings. This is the first time in 4 years this festival has taken place, an important ritual expressing the unique cultural identity of Mino City.
